Old Support Issues for Note Taker HD

This is a list of the old support issues that were posted for Note Taker HD. They refer to older versions of the app and are here mainly for historic purposes and for those few who haven't yet upgraded.

Our support email address for Dan Bricklin's Note Taker HD is: support@softwaregarden.com. Support videos are on the Note Taker HD YouTube Channel.

Version 5.0

  • Lagging and jagged ink. The writing of ink appears to be lagging and sometimes less smooth than previous versions of the app (such as version 4.5) and the recently written strokes flash more often during writing.

This is fixed in the 5.0.5 release.

Until then, if you write slower the problem should be less pronounced.

  • Pages with timestamp shapes sometimes crash when duplicated or used as a template. There are a variety of issues with timestamps, especially those that include the name of the page. Those with the name of the page may cause a crash when the thumbnail of that sheet is being automatically created for a duplicated page. Restarting the app should resume, and when the sheet is edited the thumbnail should be created correctly.

There are also some other issues with timestamps with regards to the date/time shown in thumbnails, and with the create date/time of a duplicated sheet.

This is fixed in the 5.0.5 release.

Until then, either do not duplicate pages with timestamps that include the page name, or restart from the crashes.

  • Tapping on the screen sometimes "pastes" text or objects instead of writing ink. If you change the text color of a block of text, shape, or image caption to be other than the default solid black, and then switch the ink color to the same color for the first time on a page with the thinnest line thickness, writing ink will insert new copies of that object instead of writing ink. Only text color is involved -- border and fill colors are not involved.

This is fixed in the 5.0.5 release.

In the meantime, if you encounter this behavior, delete the inappropriately created objects and then do one of the following: (1) Use a different ink color or line thickness. (2) Change the text color of the original objects to something else (for example, use the color chooser sliders to make a color that is almost exactly the same but not exactly the same, such as 21% Red instead of 20% Red), then save the sheet by pressing Done to return to the List of Pages, and then reload the sheet by pressing Edit to start back on the same sheet where you left off (this deletes references to the now unused objects that caused the problems). Note: If you leave even one copy of the object with that offending color you will continue to have the issue on that sheet until the new release. This only affects one sheet at a time.

  • Older issues. Some older issues, such as "Importing a PDF for annotation doesn't seem to work," listed below and not listed as "fixed" are still issues.

  • Editing the name of a tag from the page settings doesn't change the name. This is probably an old issue. When you edit tag names accessed from the page settings (not from other tools that access tags), only the Done button on the keyboard actually changes the name. Other "Done" buttons on the screen, such as in the upper-left corner, do not change the text.

Version 4.5

  • Importing a PDF for annotation doesn't seem to work. This is usually the first time you try using this feature after installing (or upgrading) the app. Sometimes the PDF file opens in the app but doesn't create an annotation page, and sometimes Note Taker HD does not show up in the "Open In..." list.

The "fix" is to reboot your iPad once or twice. (Hold down the Power button for a few seconds, confirm, then restart by pressing Power again.)

  • The VGA output is just black even though the app shows that the VGA is connected. This happens when you turn the iPad back on after it has "locked" because you haven't been using it for a few minutes. This is new behavior with iOS 4.2, and may affect other apps, too.

To get around this issue, just press the iPad "Home" button to stop Note Taker HD temporarily, and then go back into the app by either pressing the icon on the home page or double-clicking the Home button and tapping the Note Taker HD icon on the multitasking bar. When the app resumes, the VGA should work correctly.

  • The imported PDF for annotation shows up upside down. This mainly seems to occur with PDF files that are created by scanning paper pages. It stems from those files having an internal PDF "rotation" setting of 270 degrees rather then the 0 or 90 degrees that the app expects.

A temporary work-around is to create files that have 0 or 90 degree rotations. One way is to use Adobe's Acrobat software (such as Acrobat X) to rotate the pages 180 degrees after scanning them upside down.

Alternatively, you can have Acrobat "recognize" the text on the pages (using the Recognize Text tool). Leave the default "PDF Output Style" as "Searchable Image" but you might want to use a low "downsample" such as "150 dpi" to keep the files from getting too large. Doing the recognition ends up with the same image on the page, but with a file with a rotation that is "0". (You also end up with Acrobat readers "knowing" the characters of the image by placing "invisible" text over it -- but Note Taker HD ignores that.) It seems that to do recognition, Acrobat first turns it all "right-side up" by-passing the issue with Note Taker HD.

    This was fixed in 5.0.

  • PDF and other background images do not seem to work. The symptom is that you see your normal background on each page, or a message about a missing image.

This occurs if you have changed your New Page Initial Settings for Background to a custom background image and not one of the built-in backgrounds, like "Wide Lined."

To get around this issue, change that setting (New Page Initial Settings for Background) on the App Settings to one of the built-in ones, like "Wide Lined" or "Blank". You can still create new pages with a custom background image by using the Template Pages functionality (described in the beginning of the List of Pages help topic). This was fixed in 5.0.

Version 4.1

  • The full-page Edit Tags list accessed from the "Tag(s) For Page" list accessed from the Page Settings does not let you scroll far enough to tap the "Add New Tag" row if you have more than one screenful of tags. The other, popover tag editing lists (such as in the List of Pages Tools' "Edit Tags" tool) do let you scroll far enough and add more tags so this should not normally be an issue. In any case, you will be able to scroll to all tags for selecting, even on the full-page list -- it's only that last row with the "Add New Tag" on it that's a problem.

This should be fixed in the 4.5 release.

Version 4.0

  • Some people are reporting instances when adding an image from the iPad Photos on the Background Image List while changing a background's image crashes the app. (This is on the the Background Images List, not on the Background list that includes Narrow Lined, etc.)

This seems to be when you try to "change" the background's image and no backgrounds have been "created" and added to the list to change. (You create a background with the "-- Add New Item --" row in the list.) That is, the selected item is the "-- Add New Item --" row. The app is not catching this as a not-allowed case (changing the attributes of a non-existent item), so make sure that you have an actual, created Background Image item selected in the list before pressing "Change" or making other changes to the item.

This should be fixed in the 4.1 release.

  • There are cases where the ink is not echoed to the VGA screen in Edit 1. For now, try using Edit 2 or making sure that the App Setting "VGA Adapter Echoing and Performance" is set to "Echo as you write". (The performance issues are less with version 4.0 than previous versions.)

This should be fixed in the 4.1 release.

  • The Transcribe New Contact tab's Save operation does not give you a "Done" button to save the contact in the Contacts database. Instead, if possible create the contact manually with just the name using the iPad Contacts app, and then go back to the Note Taker HD Transcribe tool and use the Contacts tab to add to the existing contact. The values in other fields that you already filled in should still be there from the original attempt.

This should be fixed in the 4.1 release.

  • There are times when the Transcribe tab's Save operation does not save changes. This happens when you are using an external keyboard (not the pop-up, on-screen one). The internal "page modified" indication is not being set to let the app know to save the new text edits when you go away from that sheet or page. A work-around is to do the following: After Saving the Transcribe edit, do anything that "changes" the state of that page, such as zooming or panning, writing, or, in Edit 1, tapping the "fit to width" or "fit to height" button, or, in Edit 2, moving the Detail Area. That will set the "page modified" indication and the page will be written out along with the text edits.

Note: While such changes cause the page to be saved, the "Last Modified" date/time is only set by changes such as writing or erasing. Many other changes, like changing the zoom, are not considered "modifications."

This should be fixed in the 4.1 release.

Version 3.0

  • No reported problems.

Version 2.1

  • Auto-Advance during cursive writing issues: Automatic Advance does not always move over the correct amount when you are writing an overlapped stroke that is not considered something like a dotted "i" or crossed "t". This occurs when the Detail Area has been set to a size other than the smaller preset size. It should not be as much of an issue if you use printed characters.

This was fixed in the 3.0 release.

  • No other reported problems. (2.1 is the first released version. It was chosen to be higher than the last Note Taker for the iPhone/iPod touch one.)
